After a blissfully hum-drum day at work, I shuttled off to my temporary single dad duties. Kate had a soccer game in Polk City. On the ride home from Ma and Pa Snyder’s house, Kate reminded me at least three times she had to bring after-game treats. Polk City is tucked up north and well [...]

I’m now reading The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco. Eco’s famous for his intricate novels, with layer upon layer of reference and meaning. He’s a semiotician, an academic concerned with signs and the meanings of messages, symbols, metaphors and the like. That’s another way of saying he’s one hell of a lot [...]

In my recent review of Sandman Slim, I was unaware of the historical figure of Vidocq. Eugène François Vidocq is the father of criminal investigation, i.e. the grandpa of detectives, and creator of the French Sûreté Nationale. Kadrey’s cleverly including Vidocq to liven up his Chandler-esque fantasy. Read all about Eugène François Vidocq on Wikipedia. [...]

On deck is Amortals by Matt Forbeck. I’ve started reading, and I can tell I’m going to need to get that Sandman Slim first-person voice out of my head for this book. I spent the day shopping with my son. He’s only 6, and recently discovered the joys of reading, mostly Captain Underpants. He reads the series over and over again, giggling his head off every time. I’m proud to say he was probably more interested in the ereaders we examined at Best Buy than me. I’m [...]

I joined up with Intrepid Media — a long-standing independent writers and community site. My co-worker, Tracey Kelley, is an active member, and she introduced me. I just posted my first column there, a well-meaning rant about these crazy kids today: Generation Y not.

The Internet is changing Des Moines, and it’s about time. I’ve started using Twitter in the past few weeks. It took me a while to appreciate it beyond some freakish obsessive compulsion to share what we’re all having for lunch. It turns out, it’s a very interesting peep hole into a growing scene of digerati [...]

I’ve been busy with work and house details. The writing’s been damned thing, but the music … Denver was fantastic, and so were The Police. I’ve been a huge, huge fan for over 20 years. Never thought I’d see the day they reuninted and went on tour.
